Launching of the Montpellier Institute for Water and Environment (IM2E)

November 2013, 21st -22nd, Agropolis International, Montpellier

The Montpellier Institute for Water and Environment (IM2E) has been officially launched, at Agropolis International, on November 2013, 22th.

The IM2E relies on the scientific, academic and innovation potential of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, in the field of water and environmental sciences. The IM2E gathers 14 research Units presenting a potential of approximately 400 scientists and 150 PhD students. It contributes to the high international visibility of Montpellier due to the concentration of skills and the presence of French and foreign organizations dedicated to the international cooperation.

Companies and scientists exchange day

The objective is to propose a scientific animation for 14 laboratories / teams involved in the IM2E Institute and to strengthen partnerships with companies

Why Montpellier ?

The IM2E leans:

  • On the scientific, academic and innovation potential of the region Languedoc-Roussillon, in the field of water and environmental sciences
  • On the strong international legibility of Montpellier due to the presence of the French and foreign bodies dedicated to the international cooperation.

Water resources and aquatic ecosystems management constitutes a major stake for humanity in the XXIth century, in terms of sanitary, food, societal, economic and financial, environmental, political and geopolitical issues
Research and higher education organisms gather to create the IM2E in order to cope with these challenges.

Regarding research, the Languedoc Roussillon region displays an exceptional concentration of researchers in the water, ecology and agronomy fields, proposing integrated solutions for water management.

Reagardins training: the Region has a leading potential concerning higher education at the European level.

Regarding economic development, an important pool of companies is present in the Region, it is federated within the pole of competitiveness with world vocation on the Water.

  • Impulse and coordinate interdisciplinary projects involving scientific communities of northern and southern countries

Gaining a national and international scientific legibility to become in this field a leading European research and training center with strong attractiveness.

L’IM2E key figures

Research :

  • 14 Units including 400 scientists and 150 PhD students

Training :

  • 1000 students including 150 PhD students,
  • 4 Engineering schools,
  • A Master's degree in WATER :110 students a year among whom 30 % of foreign students, in particular from Southern countries,
  • 6 doctoral schools in Montpellier, partnerships with doctoral schools in the South (Senegal, Morocco, Burkina Faso,Thailand).

Economic development

  • A Pole of competitiveness with world vocation on water,

  • SWELIA association, which gathers 90 companies, and Transferts LR (theses with Cifre convention, start-ups creation, patent registrations, etc.)
