Save the date : Scientific animation on Agroecology - Ecological intensification of cropping systems
November 13, 2018, 10h00, Agropolis International, Montpellier (France) To achieve a sustainable food future that makes optimal use of earth’s natural resources, we need to move away from the current linear product footprint approach, and to start using a food systems approach. A modern circular food system combines innovative technology with basic ecological design principles derived from natural ecosystems. It does not ban external inputs but uses these as a complement to circular inputs. Europe can take a leading role in developing such systems. In this presentation three principles will be considered in some detail:

- The prime role of plant biomass for human nutrition. The consequences of circularity for growth defining, limiting and reducing factors will be discussed;
- The (re-)use of by-products and waste in circular food systems. A priority in use of by-products and waste will be proposed;
- The role of livestock in circular food systems is analysed and consequences for our consumption of animal proteins are discussed.

This presentation is an amended version of the Mansholt lecture which was given in Brussels in September, together with professor of Animal Production Systems, Imke de Boer (also Wageningen University).
