European Labex UPM, a Virtual Laboratory of Universiti Putra Malaysia, in Montpellier, at Agropolis International

History

The European Labex UMP was initiated in May 2015 and set up along the lines of the Brazilian Embrapa’s LABEX Europe and Argentinian Inta’s LABINTEX. The arrival of the first coordinator from Putra Malaysia University in August 2016 will foster the development of various cooperation activities dealing with: sustainability of the agri-agro chain, climate change and agriculture (strategy for adaptation and limitation), food security focusing on South Eastern Asia. Due to the involvement of a university, this Labex will collaborations related to student mobility.

UPM is a major university in Malaysia.
It was officially created in 1971 due to the merging of the Agriculture Faculty (created in 1931) with the Forest Faculty and the veterinary and animal science Faculty. Later it extended its fields to science and technology. The will to give UPM an international scope has implied the development of numerous international partnerships that allowed UPM to be ranked 270th according to QS World University Rankings.

 

Main steps of the partnership

August 2016 - Mrs Tee Tuan Poy (Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Animal Science) has been appointed Coordinator of the European Labex UPM.

She has taken her functions on 22nd August, 2016 at Agropolis International, Montpellier (France). She is in charge of Labex UPM coordination at French and European level.

July 2015 - Interview with Shaufique Fahmi Ahmad Sidique
– Director for Institute of Agricultural and Food Policy Studies, 27 July 2015 (Montpellier) on the occasion of the visit at Agropolis International of a delegation from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) lead by the Vice Chancelor of the University, within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed for 5 years which includes the implementation of a Labex (a Virtual Laboratory of Universiti Putra Malaysia).
The European Labex UPM is set along the lines of the two Labex currently hosted in Montpellier: namely the Brazilian Embrapa’s LABEX Europe and the Argentinian Inta’s Labintex.

December 2015 - INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP 'FROM SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TO GREEN CAPITALISM: MILESTONES IN THE MARKETIZATION OF NATURE'

This workshop was organised as part of the "Privatising Global Environmental Governance" project bringing together researchers from CIRAD, INRA, CNRS and AGROPARISTECH, with financial support from the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) in partnership with the UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA international labex in Montpellier (Labex Sustainable Tropical Agriculture and Food Systems) and UNIVERSIDADE de BRASILIA (Centro de desenvolvimento sustentável).

May 2015 : Agropolis International and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) have signed a memorandum of understanding

Agropolis International and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), over five years, in order to strengthen and promote research and development co-operation related to the following issues: sustainable agri-food value chain, climate change and agriculture, Food security issues in South East Asia and any other areas of common interest.
