The next issue of Les dossiers d'Agropolis International is out!: 'Agroecological transformation for sustainable food systems/Special France-CGIAR partnership'

The French Commission for International Agricultural Research (CRAI) and Agropolis International, on behalf of CIRAD, INRAE and IRD and in partnership with CGIAR, has produced this new issue in the ‘Les dossiers d'Agropolis international' series devoted to agroecology. This document is published with the contribution and support of the French Ministry of European and Foreign Affairs, the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Occitanie Region, the French Research Organizations (CIRAD, INRAE and IRD) and CGIAR. This publication has been produced within the framework of the Action Plan signed by CGIAR and the French government on February 4th 2021.

The urgency of agroecological transformation of agrifood systems linked to SDGs will be one of the game changers discussed at the UN World Food Systems Summit this year. A variety of agroecological transition pathways and also a diversity in terms of means for public action are ahead of us. Lessons are also to be learned from past trajectories in the Global North and other parts of the world.
These issues have led some 500 French and CGIAR agroecology scientists and experts from around 100 national and international universities and research organizations from France and abroad and from all CGIAR Centers to work together in compiling this Dossier. The authors showcase their expertise at the disposal of policymakers, extension services, NGOs and farmers' associations committed to promoting the agroecological transition. They present new ways of conducting research based on systemic and transdisciplinary approaches, implementing inclusive participatory methods, the solution-based theory of change, fostering partnerships with national agricultural research systems, while enhancing orchestration of research efforts to converge towards sustainable food systems!

the 4th International Conference on Global Food Security held virtually on December 6-9, 2020 (brought together 920 participants from 75 countries), has addressed the topic of food security at all spatial levels from local to global, and from an interdisciplinary and systemic food systems perspective.
It has explored the environmental, nutritional, agricultural, demographic, socio-economic, political, technological and institutional drivers, costs and outcomes of current and future food security, as well as interactions with contextual factors including climate change, urbanisation, greening the economy and data-driven technologies. It has explored the state-of-the-art of interdisciplinary insight, trade-offs and synergies in transforming food systems, towards towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. In January 2021, the Conference Scientific Committee published a statement summarizing the key scientific challenges as discussed by speakers and delegates in the conference.

The organisers had produced a Code of Conduct, acknowledging the legitimate interests of the different stakeholders of the conference, recognising that they are all part of a scientific endeavour to promote scientific knowledge sharing and to produce public goods on global food security. Today, the Conference Committee is pleased to announce that the commitment of making the content of the conference available for a wider audience has been honoured. In addition, a paper from the conference has been published in the Global Food Security journal: Statement based on the 4th international conference on global food security December 2020: Challenges for a disruptive research Agenda and it has fairly been made free access by Elsevier.

'Bonding science and policy to accelerate

This event is organized in support of the United Nations Food Systems Summit 2021 on behalf of the French Minister of Agriculture and Food, the French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the French Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.
To transform our food systems and ensure their contribution to the Agenda 2030, urgent progress is needed both by science to provide relevant knowledge and by the policy arena to act. This also challenges the interface mechanisms between scientific evidence and policy design.
This high level event will mobilise dialogue across multiple perspectives to achieve greater alignment and action on a common direction of travel towards healthy and sustainable food systems. Exploring the latest research and policy related advances with a “real-world” lens, it will make a significant contribution to the debate on both where to put combined efforts and how to strengthen science-policy linkages towards the United Nations Food Systems Summit and beyond.
This event is organised by MUSE - Montpellier Université d'Excellence with its members and partners (University of Montpellier, Agropolis International, CIRAD, INRAE, IRD,CGIAR and with support from AFD (Agence Française de Développement).
