As part of the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF) declared by the United Nations for 2014, the research institutions of Montpellier’s hub (Agropolis International) have taken the initiative to organize International Encounters on “Family Farming and Research”.
This event is co-organized with the CGIAR Consortium, the Global Forum on Agriculture Research (GFAR) and the World Rural Forum (WRF) and supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, the French Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry and various national and international organizations. It will feed the agenda of IYFF, help prepare the third Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD3) -the GCARD1 having been organized by Agropolis International and GFAR in Montpellier in 2010- and contribute with ideas and recommendations to the Conference of Parties at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) to be held in Paris in 2015.
The main purposes of these Encounters are
- to foster exchanges between representatives of family farming, decision makers from the political and private sectors, representatives of civil society, trainers and researchers throughout the world,
- to question and enhance research agendas dealing with family farming issues and the challenges of global change (society, economics, food security, urbanization, human mobility and migrations, nutrition and health, climate, ...).

1 - Public lecture - A lecture by Hans Herren, an outstanding scientist, former Director General of ICIPE and co-chair of the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD), and current president of the Millennium Institute. He was awarded the 1995 World Food Prize and the 2013 Right Livelihood Award. This lecture will be followed by a round table gathering high level experts and actors in family farming.

Maryam Rahmanian,a member of a local NGO, Vice-Chairperson of the Steering Committee of the High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) for Food Security
and Nutrition of the Committee on World Food Security, Iran.
Patrick Caron,Director General in charge of Research and Strategy at Cirad, France.
Ibrahim Alassane Mayaki,Chief Executive Officer of New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), Niger.
Caio Galvão de França, Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA), coordinator for the International Year of Family Farming, Brazil.
Languages: French and English with simultaneous translation.
The conference will be followed by a round table debate featuring actors and prominent experts from around the world.
2 - A 2-day Conference where researchers, trainers, decision makers, representatives of family farmers and of civil society organizations will brainstorm and discuss on research needs and priorities and modalities for higher efficiency. The Conference will include thematic workshops and plenary sessions inviting high level speakers from major institutions, renowned scientists and acknowledged leaders of farmers’ organizations.
Discussion themes
- How global change impact on family agriculture and its various evolutions?
- How family agriculture can contribute to the global challenges facing society, economy, policy making, environment and food security?
- How scientific research and development action can support family agriculture in facing these challenges?
Simultaneous translation will be provided for plenary sessions: English, Spanish and French.
The sessions on Sunday June 1, Monday June 2 morning and Tuesday June 3 afternoon are open to all without previous registration.
Registration for workshops on Monday June 2 afternoon and Tuesday June 3 morning are definitively closed.
